For prescribers
A license is a sales permit for pharmacies to sell a medicine that is not approved in Sweden.
License justification, application and permit
In order for a license to be processed, an authorized prescriber must create a license justification in the Swedish E-Health Agency's e-service Communication solution for license applications, KLAS, and a pharmacy must submit a license application. Approved licenses are valid for the duration of their validity, a maximum of one year.
The prescriber is responsible for selecting the product and choosing a pharmacy that applies for a permit from the Swedish Medical Products Agency. The patient can collect the approved licensed medicine with a prescription from any pharmacy.
Different license types: general and individual
A license can apply to an individual patient (prescription) or for use by a group of patients, a so-called general license for one or more healthcare units – clinic license or hospital license (requisition, i.e. order to a pharmaceutical supply).
